The artist-couple FA+ examines in a sometime humorist and disarming
way our social and cultural codes, something that changes colour
depending on the object and its context. To cross the limits for
the artistic, the geographical, the institutional and the cultural
is the formal and conceptual principle for FA+.
Schengen Tours
Schengen tours is a travel agency that wants to compete in the business
of "alternative travelling". The agency show their way of transportation:
a container, in this case placed in one of the most forbidden spots
of Europe, St. Peter's Place in the Vatican. In the background of
the street posters one can read the list of the 2406 persons that
died, until July 2001, trying to enter Europe without permit.
The Schengen treaty is a paper construction signed by the counties
of the European Community, Norway and Island to ignore, in a "legal"
way, the Geneva Convention for Human Rights, which they also have
signed, and avoid giving shelter to non European people in need.
To make sure that nobody gets into Schengen without a permit, a
gigantic wall has been built all around Europe, lager and far more
sophisticated than the Berlin's wall has ever been. Fortress Europe,
with border militarization, asylum laws, detention policy, deportations
and carrier sanctions has closed tightly the doors and no one without
money are welcome to immigrate, not even as a refugee. This new
situation gave birth to a new industry, the deadly industry of human
smuggling.
